APRIL OPEN MIKE NIGHT

The featured speaker of the Hobe Sound Poetry Open Mike Night on Friday April 14th was Karen Girouard. Karen - writer, historian and poet read from her collection of historical poems. Her work focuses on Colonial and Revolutionary times in Rhode Island. Her book "Pantless Prescott" describes the daring capture of the commander of the British troops, General Richard Prescott on Aquidneck Island during the early years of the Revolutionary War. Her works provide new insights about King Phillips War, Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson. Read Karen's poem about King Phillip (pdf)

ABOUT THE POETRY SLAM

We welcome local poets, video artists, writers and "lovers of the word" to share their creations. Richard Spisak, multimedia artist, writer, actor and poet hosts the event. The Gallery has a laptop hooked up to a large screen TV to showcase video or multimedia work but we don't always hook it up unless we plan in advance. Call Dona to arrange to show your video or multimedia work (bring it on a DVD or CD).

Everyone is welcome! People are also invited to read other people's poetry and of course we really groove on original works!

We would also like to encourage young poets and writers to attend and hope to make contact with them through the local high schools and colleges.

If you are a poet and want us to showcase your work by linking to you site please let us know by email or by calling Dona at 772 545-7432. Bring your own refreshments.

For more information call Dona Omanoff at: 772 545-7432. The Mars Gallery is located at 11760 SE Dixie Highway, Suite 7 in Hobe Sound. We are one block south of Bridge Road behind Taste Restaurant.

R U a Jew by Rick Spisak:

I'm a jew, I'm a buddhist,
I'm a pagan and what's truest,
I'm a christian and an animist

sometimes I'm a phalanalist
A tibetian, an hindu, and no matter what you do
I think I like what you due
God, I think "She's" is very very open minded
I'm reminded. When saint joans' at stake,

I'm calling Blake!
When Luther calls - I'm an eskimo too
I think that's the least I'll do
wear a ghost shirt to my baptism,
when Martin causes schism.

I'm a muslim and a druid
my position rather fluid.
I'm a Sikh and a taoist
and of that I think I'm proudist

a capitalist and a pinko
at least sometimes I think so
sometimes I'm agnostic
a rastafarian coptic

a methodist contrarian
or even a librarian

a sectarian siberian.
who often turns to Mecca
while counting on caballah
to get him to shambala

a catholic, baptist, evangelist
a dunker agrarian fundamentalist
or sevenday adventurist.

scientologist apologist
juggling snakes with the lady of the lakes.

when praying aloud at delphi
mithraic tantric yogi
a jazzman playing boogie

a close insight to god
at least that's what we thought.
a confusian and a shinto
it seems that's what I'm into,

a calvinist and a navaho
a nodding wink to xanadu
a cherokee, a swabian
swinbergian, zoastroan hussite,

a theosophist and thelamite
spilling celestial spiritual dynamite
stealing from the rich gods and giving to the poor gods.

Rick says:

"poets will rant, rave, curse, bless cajole
giggle, congeal, threaten, inspire, seduce
and bewilder

at iambic perimeter perambulations
and in short haiku hops
and in amblin
free
v e r s e eecummins ... isn't

but you could
cloudless
and contempoaray
as you are
7-9pm

be there or be duo-decahedranal"
